Trails In Need of A Friend

Part of Benton MacKaye's vision was for the Appalachian Trail to be a backbone for a more localized system of side trails. These trails would provide a wider range of diversity and greater access to the A.T. They would be combined with one another, with forest roads, and with the A.T. to provide enjoyable circuit hikes.

Our area is fortunate to have many side trails. Many are abandoned forest service roads, trails from the CCC days, or former sections of the A.T. The current ATC Central Virginia guidebook describes these trails in detail. However, most of these trails currently don't get the maintenance required for a high quality hiking experience. Volunteers are badly needed to "adopt" and take responsibility for one of these trails.

The job is that of a section leader. The leader is responsible for periodic light maintenance along the trail. This includes cutting summer weeds, removing branches, and generally keeping an eye on the trail. For major clearing or for removal of large trees, the leader can request support from NBATC's Saturday Maintenance Crew.

These trails need you! If you would like to make a positive contribution and make a real difference in a special area, please pick a trail and let Sharon Ripley (237-4015) know of your interest. This is a government sponsored program and you do not have to be a member of the NBATC to join this program. If one of these trails has special significance to you contact the USFS, Ranger District, Nautral Bridge Station, VA, or Sharon today!
