Both ends of this section of the AT mark 18th century travel routes across the Blue Ridge; from Buchanan to the Peaks of Otter to Bedford and from Fincastle to Buford's on the Lynchburg-Salem Turnpike. The trail closely parallels the Blue Ridge Parkway in this section crossing it four times. The AT crosses the Parkway at 1.8 miles and reaches the blue-blazed trail to Bobblets Gap Shelter at 2.5 miles. The trail passes Hammon Hollow Trail (3.2 miles), Montvale Overlook (5.5 miles), Spec Mines Trail (5.7 miles) and reaches the end of the section at Black Horse Gap.
