Fish Hatchery Road to Salt Log Gap (USFS 63) (7.8 miles)

The AT traverses a remote section of the George Washington National Forest in this section climbing Porters Ridge and Elk Pond Mountain. The area was largely stripped of timber between 1918 and 1938 when the South River Lumber Company built 57 miles of railroad track to support logging operations. Seeley-Woodworth Shelter is 2.2 miles from Fish Hatchery Road. At 5.0 miles Wolfs Rock provides an excellent view of Spy Rock, Main Top, Three Ridges and The Priest. The trail continues along a ridge and descends to the end of the section at Salt Log Gap. "Salt Log" comes from the practice of putting handfuls of salt for livestock in the notches of fallen logs!
