Dr. Evelyn Casner was a pioneering women in American mathematics; graduating from Wellesely College in 1921, receiving a M.A. Degree from Brown University in 1924, and a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Chicago in 1936.

Evelyn joined the faculty at Randolph-Macon Woman’s College in 1929 as as associate professor of mathematics. She was promoted to full professor at R-MWC in 1941 and remained at R-MWC for the rest of her career.

Evelyn served as club president, 1958-1962, as well as trail supervisor, and council member. When Evelyn passed away in 1964, she was still serving on the faculty of the College, and an active member of NBATC.

Following her death, a carved wooden plaque was made as a memorial to her dedication the the NBATC, and has been awarded annually since 1966 to the member hiking the most miles on club hikes in that year.
